History

1996

After returning from NY, established “HIROPON FACTORY”. (Marunuma Art Forest, Asaka City, Saitama Prefecture) with a full-time staff of six. However, they were all volunteers, or rather, they were fed by them.

Miyoshi factory manager Shisho and painting advisor Yoshikazu Hirata have been helping out since that time.

Artist Mr. Shisho was also an assistant at this time.

1997

Full-fledged organization begins. Hiro Pon Factory No. 2 is established in the Marunuma Art Forest as a space dedicated to the production of artworks. Building No. 1 is divided into two sections: “Building No. 1 = office work and computer-related work” and “Building No. 2 = production of artworks.

1998

Established “Hiropon Factory NY Studio” in Brooklyn, NY.

The space is about four and a half tatami mats.

2000

SUPERFLAT” is published. An exhibition was simultaneously held at Parco Gallery. The following year, an overseas exhibition began at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and traveled to Seattle and Minneapolis.

2001

Kaikai Kiki Ltd. is established. Incorporated.

Solo exhibition “Summon or Open the Door, Recover or Annihilate” at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo. With this exhibition, Kaikai Kiki begins hiring office staff along with the production department. This was because dealing with the press had become too complicated and he could no longer concentrate on the production of his artworks. Chiaaki Kasahara, currently Kaikai Kiki’s No. 2, began working at this time.

2002

Solo exhibition “Kaikai Kiki” and curated exhibition “Coloring” at Musee d’Art Contemporain Cartier, Paris (second installment of the SUPERFLAT trilogy)

Dozens of assistants quit at once due to too much work. Collaboration with Louis Vuitton begins.

GEISAI#1″, the predecessor of the “Art Dojo Grand Prix” held at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo the previous year, celebrates its 20th anniversary in the spring of 2014, and currently hosts an exhibition of graffiti artists under the same name.

2003

Double Spiral Inversion,” a solo exhibition at Rockefeller Center in New York City.

2004

Kaikai Kiki Animation Studio is established in Daikanyama, Tokyo. (The business is now taken over by Studio Ponkotan. All CG animation.)

2006

Little Boy” exhibition selected by AICA (American Chapter of the International Federation of Art Critics) for “Best Thematic Exhibition Award” and “SUPERFLAT” series becomes a world language.

Moved the New York office and studio to the current studio and office in Long Island City. In Japan, the head office is relocated from Asaka to Motoazabu, Minato-ku, Tokyo. The design room and animation studio are also integrated.

2007

Takashi Murakami’s retrospective exhibition ©MURAKAMI begins its world tour. It tours four cities around the world and concludes in 2009.

2008

The current studio is established in Miyoshi-cho, Iruma-gun, Saitama. A goods distribution center is also established.

Kaikai Kiki Gallery on the B1F of Kaikai Kiki’s Motoazabu office begins full-scale operations. Numerous exhibitions are held, inviting artists from Japan and abroad.

Kaikai Kiki opens its first store, Kaikai Zingaro, on Nakano Broadway.

2010

Solo exhibition “MURAKAMI VERSAILLES” at the Palace of Versailles.

Hidari Zingaro opened in Nakano Broadway.

Opened Kaikai Kiki Gallery Taipei. (Closed in 2012).

2011

Donated 55,886,376 yen to the Red Cross Society of the Republic of China in support of the Great East Japan Earthquake and held a new day auction at Christie’s in New York. Donated $8,756,100 to the Sasakawa Peace Foundation USA, GlobalGiving, and International Medical Corps. Established Studio Ponkotan, an animation studio in Sapporo. Opened pixiv Zingaro and Oz Zingaro in Nakano Broadway.

2012

Solo exhibition “Murakami – Ego” at Al Riwaq Exhibition Hall in Doha.

100m long Five Hundred Arhats exhibit.

Opened Hidari Zingaro Berlin. (Closed in 2014)

2013

The movie “Meme no Kurage” was released. Draws the jacket for Yuzu’s original album “LAND”.

Opened the first cafe Bar Zingaro in Nakano Broadway.

2014

Inauguration of “VFX PONCOTAN”, a new studio in Tokyo.

The “Museum of the Beginning” by new day foundation opens in Inawashiro, Fukushima.

Meme no Jellyfish” toured North America.

Event space “Zingaro Space” started in Nakano Broadway.

Participated in the “1 in 11” Charity Auction, a project to promote education with UNICEF.
