Hidari Zingaro
The name was inspired by the genius sculptor, Hidari Jingorō, said to have existed in the early Edo period. Numerous legends surround his name, and one such story is as follows. The surname "Hidari (left)" symbolizes anti-establishment or punk, in contrast to “right" symbolizing societal rules. The given name “Jingorō” was taken from the word “Zingaro," a term for wandering people, or Gypsies, in Europe that was possibly imported to Japan as an exotic term around his time; the kanji characters for the name were adopted for phonetic resemblance. The name perfectly embodies the spirit of an artist who championed freedom. We further paired the sound of this name with kanji for 'moth' (a night insect) and 'wolf' (a symbol of the transparency of air that dominates the night). Combining these elements, we arrived at "Hidari Zingaro", representing our declaration of complete freedom of the heart that blooms at night. This is the name of the new gallery presented by Kaikai Kiki. We appreciate your patronage!
