The Takashi Murakami "Mononoke" Kyoto "Gozan no Okuribi" PVC Figure Makes Its Debut as a Furusato Nozei Gift from Kyoto City!

Takashi Murakami’s Soft Vinyl Figure, Inspired by Kyoto’s Summer Tradition “Gozan no Okuribi,” is Now Available as a Furusato Nozei Gift from Kyoto City.

“Gozan no Okuribi” is a traditional event held annually on August 16th in the mountains of Kyoto to send off the spirits of ancestors. The event features five grand fires: the “Dai” character illuminated on Higashiyama, “Myo” and “Ho” characters on Matsugasaki, the “Funagata” (ship shape) on Nishigamo, the “Left Dai” character on Daikokuyama, and the “Toriigata” (shrine gate shape) on Saga. These five fires create a mesmerizing spectacle that lights up the summer night sky in Kyoto.

This historical tradition has been uniquely transformed into character-inspired figures by Takashi Murakami. Each figure reflects the symbols and shapes of the Gozan fires, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship and attention to detail. The figures offer a way to enjoy this cherished tradition, often lovingly referred to as “Okuribi” or “Daimonji-san” by locals, right in the palm of your hand.

We invite you to seize this opportunity to own a piece of Kyoto’s history and tradition reimagined through Murakami’s distinct artistic lens.
