Kaikai Kiki Gallery is pleased to present “Shit Show 2024”, MADSAKI’s solo exhibition of new works, starting December 6, 2024.
The venue for this exhibition is a normally shuttered space on the 3rd floor of Nakano Broadway. Before undergoing renovations, the space will temporarily open as a gallery, and transform to evoke the atmosphere of MADSAKI’s studio. The exhibition will feature drawings related to watches, as well as a series of paintings completed with brushes, all created specifically for this event.
This is the first time Kaikai Kiki Gallery is opening a pop-up gallery within Nakano Broadway. Please stop by the exhibition.
Message from the Artist
“SHITSHOW” refers to a disastrous situation, chaos in a negative sense, something unimaginably awful, or a complete mess.
Rather than being a traditional solo exhibition, it feels more like an opportunity to directly showcase the chaotic ideas that have been swirling in my head over the past year. It might be more accurate to say that this exhibition allowed me to step back and objectively reexamine myself.
When you continue to paint, there inevitably comes a time when you must say goodbye to your past self. This has happened to me many times. It’s because my current self must update my work to reflect who I am now.
I find myself asking: Who am I? What does it mean for me to express myself? These are questions I must rediscover answers to. This is a crossroads I must confront—it’s not something that necessarily needs to be shown to others, nor is it something I feel is appropriate to display. In a way, it’s akin to exposing something deeply embarrassing.
However, this is the truth, the reality, and it is through this process that I can meet a new version of myself.
